At the age of 33, Mandy was diagnosed with breast cancer. While she felt well supported by her family and doctors during the treatment process, she still felt like something was missing. After some reflection, she realized that she was not connecting with the other women she was undergoing chemo with because they were at different stages of life from her. The only thing she had in common with them was that she had breast cancer. After overcoming her diagnosis, Mandy decided to go back to school and commit her life to helping other young people with cancer.
By helping other patients connect with, learn from, and offer support to each other, Mandy’s story speaks to the Patient Voice Principle of Empowerment.
