Julie’s “call to action” came when the independent living facility where her parents were staying claimed that they were no longer able to care for her father, because they felt that his dementia deemed him a suicide risk. While Julie knew her father did not want to cause himself harm, she took it upon herself to find a place for him to be taken care of where the staff would look at her father as a person, as opposed to “just a diagnosis.” As someone who works as a physical therapist with the geriatric population, Julie was torn between being a caregiver as a daughter, and being a caregiver by profession, in finding the best and most dignified care for her father fighting dementia.
Julie’s Story illustrates the Patient Voice Principle of Dignity.
